some suggestions for reading:

Douglas Adams – The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (5 Volumes)
Stanislaw Lem – All of Lems books (probably the most famous is “Solaris” but it’s not necessary the best)
Arkadi and Boris Strugazki – all of their books (especially “Hard to be a God” – in English they are written: Arkady Strugatsky and Boris Strugatsky)

You mentioned that you are looking for reading material ideas… A series that I’ve been reading recently is “Malazen Book of the Fallen” by Steven Erikson. The eight that are out are fantastic.

I’ve been working my way through the Ender series recently, too. I’m reading some of the later Bean books now – currently Shadow of the Giant.
