I love his reflections on the NY Times. This one is about the line between editorial and news, and how the Times responded to it.<\/p>\n<p>I especially liked his response to the on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onthemedia.org\/episodes\/2007\/08\/31\/segments\/84854\">On The Media<\/a> interview he recently gave &#8211; introspection.<\/p>\n<p>He reviewed the paper&#8217;s coverage of the congressional hearings, and found that the Times had largely been neutral <em>and<\/em> factual. Except here:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Once, I felt The Times pulled a punch \u00e2\u20ac\u201d in the front-page article reporting Goodling\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s dramatic testimony before the House Judiciary Committee. The lead paragraph said her testimony \u00e2\u20ac\u0153suggested\u00e2\u20ac\u009d that earlier testimony by Gonzales \u00e2\u20ac\u0153may have been flawed.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d In fact, as the article made clear, her testimony that Gonzales asked her questions about her recollections of the firings contradicted his testimony that he had not spoken to his senior aides since the firings \u00e2\u20ac\u0153to protect the integrity of this investigation.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d More than a flaw was involved here; someone was telling the truth, and someone wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hoyt then goes on to describe the editorial response and early call for Gonzales&#8217; resignation\/removal.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s another On The Media podcast about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onthemedia.org\/episodes\/2007\/09\/07\/segments\/85215\">truth and memory<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s article The Truth and Alberto Gonzales was another great public editor essay by Clark Hoyt.
