{"id":4283,"date":"2012-07-31T18:16:27","date_gmt":"2012-08-01T02:16:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chesnok.com\/daily\/?p=4283"},"modified":"2012-07-31T18:25:14","modified_gmt":"2012-08-01T02:25:14","slug":"activism-in-a-giant-hierarchical-bureaucracy-lessons-from-a-consultant-to-the-millitary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chesnok.com\/daily\/2012\/07\/31\/activism-in-a-giant-hierarchical-bureaucracy-lessons-from-a-consultant-to-the-millitary\/","title":{"rendered":"Activism in a giant, hierarchical bureaucracy: Lessons from a consultant to the millitary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My favorite talk about activism and behavior change at <a href=\"http:\/\/oscon.com\">OSCON 2012<\/a> came from an unexpected source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oscon.com\/oscon2012\/public\/schedule\/detail\/24185\">Kane McLean<\/a>, part of the Strategy &#038; Communications Group at BRTRC Technology Research Corporation and currently works supporting the Under Secretary of the Army at the United States Army Office of Business Transformation.<\/p>\n<p>This talk blew my mind for a number of reasons:<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The whole talk was a behavior change manifesto.<\/li>\n<li>This was a talk about implementing open source technology inside the US Military.<\/li>\n<li>Kane was a great speaker.<\/li>\n<li>The advice was practical, actionable and immediately redistributable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I evangelized the 7 points made in the talk to at least 10 people who missed the talk later in the day. And I had the distinct pleasure of introducing Kane to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bjfogg.com\/\">BJ Fogg<\/a>&#8216;s work.<\/p>\n<p>What I love about this is the <i>inevitability<\/i> of his method. And especially the admonition to ignore the haters. Well, he said &#8220;DON&#8217;T WASTE MUCH EFFORT ON RESISTANCE&#8221; (caps mine).
